PlayStation’s latest acquisition could mean more freebies for gamers
Sony just announced a new loyalty program that is free to join just a few weeks ago. PlayStation Stars will allow players to earn rewards for playing. That’s it. There’s no catch.
PlayStation users must complete “campaigns or activities” to receive these rewards. Some activities can be as simple as opening a game. PlayStation Stars will launch later in the year, but PlayStation’s most recent acquisition may reveal more details about what freebies users can expect.
Sony acquired Repeat. Gg is a popular esports platform that hosts online tournaments. Participants in Repeat. Gg’s tournaments are eligible to win coins that can be exchanged for gift cards at Amazon, G2A and the PS Store. It seemed that Sony was expanding its esports capabilities when the acquisition was announced. But, Repeat. Gg could be just the new team behind PlayStation Stars.
It’s fantastic, just think about it. Both the play-to-win and prize concepts are very similar. It is unlikely that Repeat. Gg will continue to offer winners Amazon and G2A gift certificates now that PlayStation has acquired Repeat. Gg. As it stands, Repeat. Gg will now be offering the PlayStation Star rewards. This could lead to more freebies for PlayStation players.
PlayStation stated previously that all PlayStation Stars members would be able to earn loyalty points. You can redeem points in a catalogue which may include PSN wallet money and selected PlayStation Store products. Additional benefit: PlayStation Plus members enrolled in PlayStation Stars earn points for purchases made on PlayStation Store.” We’ll be watching for the full rollout of this project, but the bottom line remains that freebies will soon be available. This is a win.
