ADVENTURE

Alone in the Dark will be back with a completely original story from SOMA’s writer.

Officially, Alone in Dark will be back. The new game will be revealed today at THQ Nordic’s digital showcase and will “reimagine” the 1990s survival horror trilogy. It will feature the same characters, locations and themes as the cult classics in “a unique story.”

Alone in the Dark, a survival horror game released in 1992, is widely considered one of the genre’s most important and influential examples. However, the series went downhill over the years. The most recent release, Alone in the Dark: Illumination, was released in 2015 and had a shockingly low 19% rating on Metacritic. THQ Nordic purchased the series from Atari in 2018. However, they waited until now.

Pieces Interactive, THQ Nordic studio, created the reboot. It will be about Emily Hartwood (and Edward Carnby), who is on a search for Hartwood’s missing uncle at Derceto Manor. This is a home for the mentally exhausted. The couple discovers a lot more than they expected, with strange residents, dangerous monsters and portals to nightmarish realms. They also encounter evil in the Lovecraftian-tinged Deep South, established in the 1920s US. You can play as Edward or Emily with entirely different levels and cutscenes. The gameplay’s backbone will be combat and puzzle-solving. It unfolds over “a deeply psychological tale that transcends the realms of what is possible.”

This is marketing hype, but I am inclined to give it another chance or not dismiss it entirely. Mikael Hedgeberg is writing the new Alone in the Dark. Hedberg was previously a writer for Frictional Games games like Penumbra: Black Plague and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Hedberg is a credible horror storyteller. While Alone in the Darks is very different from Frictional’s, there’s no denying that Hedberg can take the tale in a new, more horrifying direction.

Alone in the Dark’s launch date has not been revealed, but it will be available at Gamescom 2022 (August 24-28). It is reasonable to expect, or at least hope; that the game will be released soon.
