ADVENTURE

Wreckreation is a combination of Trackmania and a Forge mode.

Wreckreation was one of the most exciting games at THQ’s showcase today. It is a racing game similar to Trackmania and Hot Wheels Unleashed, focusing on custom content and editing courses as they happen.

The trailer for the game features confused local radio chatter about gravity-defying race tracks before moving to cinematically shot gameplay of racing and vehicular destruction at the aerial loop-de–loops. The trailer shows the game’s ability to track, build and customize. Players can place and resize obstacles, track features, and race against other players/NPCs.

Car-on-car violence is what piqued my interest. Trackmania has offered “Hot Wheels” and “life-sized” racing action on rollercoaster-like courses for quite some time. However, the focus was on time trials gameplay. Wreckreation promises something more, with progressive damage reducing the cars and the possibility to drive your opponents off the track. It’s a Smash Bros. four-player game with no restrictions and items for Trackmania’s Fox-only Final Destination.

Wreckreation’s sandbox-building capabilities also hold a lot of promise. Wreckreation’s sandbox building is like Halo’s Forge, but Trackmania has a more traditional level editor. Wreckreation, however, seems more like Halo’s Forge. This mode allows for on-the-fly editing and coordinating active races. Three Fields Entertainment also boasts a team of experienced talent from Burnout. These people are familiar with arcade racing. Wreckreation has not yet been released, but there is a Steam page.
