Sony Announced Some Bad News About The PlayStation 5

Since its launch nearly two years ago (! The PlayStation 5 has proven to be a difficult product to purchase since its launch almost two years ago (! Due to stock shortages worldwide and scalpers buying so much stock, it wasn’t easy to grab one of Sony’s new-generation consoles.

The situation looked good, with promises of a decrease in shortages by 2024 (still an impressive wait), but it just got worse. According to Kotaku, Sony just increased the price of its PS5 in nearly every major PlayStation region. Except for Japan, the price changes will take effect immediately.

The Disc edition in the UK will cost you PS479.99, up from PS449.99, and the Digital edition will run you PS389.99, up from PS359.99. It now costs EUR549.99 to buy the Disc edition, up from EUR499.99, and EUR449.99 to purchase the Digital edition (from EUR399.99).

You can quickly go through the rest. Australia (Disc edition is now AUD $799.95, digital is AUD $6649.95), Canada ($CAD $649.99 for Disc), Canada (CAD $519.99 Digital), Mexico (Disc now MXN $14,000.999, digital is MXN $12.499), China (4,299 yuan) and Japan (Y=60.478 yen (Disc), 49,478 yen (Digital), both inclusive of tax). Kotaku provided these figures.

You may have noticed that the US is not on that list. This could be because gamers in America have managed to get away with it. Sony has described the price rise as “a necessity given current global economic conditions”.
