Life in Skyrim is dangerous for NPCs. Players are often around to cause trouble and hunt down those who might rat out the guards.

Sometimes, however, these frustrated adventurers focus on the details of the game’s story and not on their Ebony blade kill lists.

This is a current example of a forgotten aspect of the game’s cart-based intro sequence. Most players have seen it hundreds of times. However, some are now questioning why Helgen is so different.

Why doesn’t fus-roh take the damn thing off?

This thread in Skyrim’s subreddit started with a post by GoBackToLedit. He shared an image showing a gagged Ulfric Stormcloak and asked: “Honestly? What’s stopping him from reaching up to pull away the gag to shout?”

The other players quickly began to speculate why Ulfic might remain bound. DarkyDark123 asked: “Did anyone learn anything from “Anyone else feels like racing?” GreyCrowDownTheLane elaborated: “Exactly. This is scripted in a way that shows that any escape attempt would be met by multiple archers coming from different angles.

However, some users suggested that the threat of death may not be as grave as it seems. Stormcloak is already on his way to the executioner’s blocks. MandatedCrown662 means that notions such as honour and the desire de a hero’s death, instead of trying to run as a coward, might play a part in it.

Some users speculated that the reason might be in tinfoil helmet territory. stx06 mentioned supposedly cut dialogue which suggests that the Thalmor’s true purpose for being in Helgen was to take in Ulfric so that he could be released later to continue to be a thorn in Empire’s side.

Others were more concerned about the practicalities of gaming design than in-game lore. ASTRA03 got very meta, suggesting that “The script” was Ulfric’s binding to his fate. Sir_Olds_Alot suggested that Ulfric might have restricted his movement by the giant shoulder pads of the armour he was wearing.

User NimdokBennyandAM had these thoughts and began to speculate about what would happen to the game’s story, saying that Ulfric “reaches up and takes off his gag.” He shouts and destroys the cart. Ulfric runs off into the distance, and credit rolls.
