Serious Sam was released as its initial video game (in two episodes). A first-person shooter created by Croatian Croteam, it features first and third person shooting options with first being primary (though third person can still be selected if desired). While originally only available on personal computers, Serious Sam quickly gained popularity and ports were made for numerous platforms including Xbox, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox Live Arcade etc.
The games follow Sam “Serious” Stone through his adventures fighting off forces under extraterrestrial leader Mental, which seeks to eradicate humanity from existence.
Serious Sam games follow in the tradition of first-person shooters like Doom and Quake by featuring multiple waves of enemies that attack at once across an expansive map, necessitating dodging their missiles sideways and jumping to avoid enemy missile attacks rather than retreat to cover. Life and armor levels do not regenerate automatically but can be recovered via items scattered throughout stages; their remaining percentages appear onscreen for quick reference. Combat is fast paced: stages typically consist of several intricate arenas where player must defeat various enemies before progressing; characters can carry various weapons with ammunition available plenty.
