Age of Empires is the first Age of Empires game. It was developed by Ensemble Studios, published by Microsoft and based on history. Genie Engine is a 2D, sprite based engine. In the game, the player can lead an ancient civilization through the four age periods (the Stone Age, Tool Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age), and gain access to better and newer units as they advance.
Some reviewers thought that this game did not live up to the hype of being a combination between Civilization and Warcraft when released. It received good reviews despite this and an expansion, The Rise of Rome was released in the year 1998. The expansion pack and Age of Empires were both released in a “Gold Edition” later. Age of Empires II was released in the year 1999. Age of Empires Definitive Edition was released by 20 February 2018.
