He realizes, after returning home from fishing with Ed Jones, that zombies have taken over the world. They join Maya Torres, a soldier who is also a zombie hunter. The walkie-talkie allows them to reach Lily Ritter. Lily Ritter directs them to the Church of the Ascension where she has set up a base for survivors. She encourages them to remain and get to know other survivors.
