Deadlock’s Chaotic Matchmaking: Valve Promises Overhaul to MMR System
The matchmaking in Deadlock has been a hot topic among players, and it’s understandable given that the game is still in its closed beta phase, with growing pains being inevitable. Many players have noticed inconsistencies with Matchmaking Rating (MMR) and the overall matchmaking experience, leading to chaotic games that can swing wildly in either direction.
On the official Deadlock Discord, a Valve developer named “Yoshi” acknowledged the current issues with MMR. They explained that while there is a hero-based MMR system in place, it isn’t functioning optimally at the moment. Valve is working on a complete rewrite of the matchmaking system, which should eventually create a more balanced and fairer experience.
For now, many players are dealing with mismatched games, particularly when playing with friends. Solo matches tend to be more even, but team games can quickly turn into stomps or blowouts, with one team outclassing the other. This inconsistency seems to stem from the influx of new players, and many of them likely haven’t had their MMR calibrated properly yet, making the system struggle to place everyone in appropriately challenging games.
Players across the community are sharing similar experiences: either dominating their lanes or facing opponents who are far more skilled. The chaos can be frustrating, but it’s somewhat expected given that Deadlock is still in beta and continually evolving.
For now, many players are taking a “wait and see” approach, viewing the current matchmaking as temporary while Valve works on improving it. The upcoming rewrite of the matchmaking system is expected to provide a much-needed overhaul to address these growing pains. Until then, the community is holding on with the hope that more balanced and skill-appropriate matches are on the way.
