Destiny Mobile Game in Development at NetEase
A Destiny mobile game, reportedly titled Destiny Rising, is currently in development at NetEase and may be announced soon. This news was initially shared by Twitter user Kurakasis, who clarified that Destiny Rising remains in development despite recent layoffs at developer Bungie.
The rumor gained further credibility when Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb corroborated it on Threads. According to Grubb, Destiny Rising will feature Hero characters, departing from the main series’ tradition of allowing players to create their own Guardians. Despite this shift, the game is expected to capture the familiar experience of playing Destiny on consoles or PCs, albeit in a mobile format.
This development aligns with earlier reports from Bloomberg, which noted that Bungie had hired new staff in early 2022—shortly after Sony’s acquisition of the studio—to work on incubation projects, including mobile versions of Destiny. It is possible that Destiny Rising is one of these projects. In contrast, another Destiny spin-off project, codenamed Payback, was reportedly canceled. Bungie had internally referred to Payback as “the next Destiny” rather than a direct sequel like Destiny 3.
The recent restructuring at Bungie resulted in 17% of employees being laid off, with several Destiny veterans, including executive creative director Luke Smith and vice president Mark Noseworthy, departing. However, it was later clarified that these high-profile exits were voluntary and not a result of the layoffs.
The development of Destiny Rising follows a trend of popular console and PC games being adapted for mobile platforms. Tencent, for instance, is reportedly working on a mobile version of Elden Ring, and the company acquired the rights to publish a mobile version of Blue Protocol prior to the game’s shutdown announcement.
While details are still limited, Destiny Rising could represent Bungie’s entry into the growing mobile gaming market, offering fans a new way to experience the beloved Destiny universe.
