Magnus Nedfors, Minecraft Legends’ creative director, and Dennis Ries (executive producer) sat down at the Xbox booth Livestream this week to share some details about Legends. They also shared information on new mobs that are both friends and foes. Mojang Interactive and Blackbird Interactive are launching a new RTS spinoff that will make its mark in the Minecraft world, just as with previous genre experiments. Dungeons broke the rules of Minecraft lore to create mobs that would fit its action RPG world, and Legends is doing it too.
The big baddies in Minecraft Legends are, as we saw in the initial trailer, the Nether inhabitants, the Piglins. Legends will add a new “Pigmadillo” to the mix. This creature crouches into a cube and rolls, contrary to what you might think based on the cube’s geometry. Ries also points out that there are “Bruisers,” which have two razor blades. Bit horror-esque, isn’t it? The new trailer for Mojang’s cinematic film features both mobs.
On the friendly side, you will find two types of golem joining your army. The Cobblestone Golem is great at taking down enemy structures, and the Plank Golem (which Ries describes as a ranged unit). You can also use speed wheat, a special mushroom that allows you to jump extra high to travel the world and unlock new Legends areas.
Minecraft Dungeons also introduced new mobs such as the Iceologers or Mountaineers. The Minecraft Live 2020 fan vote to choose which mob to add Vanilla Minecraft to Vanilla Minecraft, including the Iceologers. Although they lost to Glow Squid in the vote, I would not be surprised to see another Legends baddie given the same opportunity at Vanilla Minecraft fame.
In case you didn’t notice, the trailer also features a badger. Project Badger was the codename of Minecraft Legends before its reveal, so it may just be a nod. It may even be granted official mob status.
