The publisher of Shenmue 3, ININ Games, is gauging fan interest in new platform releases for the game, including a potential Xbox Series X version. A recent survey distributed to fans asks for feedback on desired platforms, graphical upgrades, and other features, with options including Xbox Series X, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Mac.
Originally released in 2019 for PS4 and PC, Shenmue 3 marked the return of the cult-classic franchise after an 18-year hiatus. Its development was funded through a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign, making it a landmark project in gaming history.
An Xbox Series X version would not be the franchise’s first appearance on a Microsoft console. Shenmue and Shenmue 2 were ported to Xbox One in 2018, reigniting fan interest in the series. This potential new release aligns with Shenmue’s 25th anniversary celebration in Japan this month.
While the survey sparks hope for an expanded reach of Shenmue 3, the series’ future remains uncertain. Ys Net director Yu Suzuki has expressed interest in continuing the franchise, though no concrete plans for a sequel have been announced.
