What is the deal with Metal Gear Solid remasters?

Two weeks from now, Tokyo Game Show will be open. This may be Konami’s most exciting show at a major gaming event. Konami’s TGS schedule indicates that a new Konami game will be revealed on September 16. A long list of Konami series deserve a return–Metal Gear and Silent Hill, Castlevania and Contra, Suikoden, and according to VGC, one of them might be on stage at the event.

VGC was told by a publishing source that the reveal could be related to a smaller project than Konami’s bigger planned revivals of Castlevania and Silent Hill. The first of these is believed to be farthest along in development. Although it is possible that Metal Gear will not be attending this show, there is mounting evidence to suggest that Metal Gear’s return is a matter of when and not if.

Metal Gear Solid’s first three games will almost certainly be remastered for PC and current consoles. Andy Robinson, VGC’s editor, first reported that MGS 1-3 were being remastered to release Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Silent Hill leaker DuskGolem confirmed the remasters in a post on ResetEra Wednesday.

“Metal Gear Solid 1-3 will get new Remasters. This is something I have been teasing about, and it is 100% true. It is planned to be available on all platforms, even consoles and Steam. Metal Gear Solid 1-3 will get newly remastered versions. You can purchase them individually, but if you buy them as a set, you’ll also receive Metal Gear 1+2 and MSX versions. This has been confirmed to me multiple times by reliable sources.

These remasters may not be announced at Tokyo Game Show, but Konami has teased them. Due to licensing issues regarding historical footage, Konami had to take Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 off digital storefronts last November. They are still missing, but Konami announced on July 13 that it would be the 35th anniversary of the #METALGEAR series. We are grateful to everyone who has enjoyed and appreciated the series. We appreciate your patience while we make arrangements to have the titles temporarily removed and available again.

It would be logical to wait until the remastered versions of MGS2/3 are available to sell them again, considering how long it took Konami to bring them back. Both games were initially released on the PlayStation 2 and remastered in HD Collection 2011 for consoles. MGS3’s first PC release would be a remaster.

VGC Metal Gear Solid 3 will receive a complete remake by Virtuos, a Singaporean gaming company with 15 offices around the globe and 3000+ employees. Virtuos is credited with numerous contributions to triple-A games. It has also contributed to Switch ports of Dark Souls Remastered and Dying Light, as well as The Outer Worlds.

VGC wrote in 2021 that Konami’s Japanese bosses had been known to be resistant to any pitch to outsource its key brands of games. VGC sources claimed that the company is now more open to outsourcing its significant franchises, despite the poor performance of Metal Gear Survive, Contra: Rogue Corps and other in-house titles.

Due to Konami’s willingness to collaborate with more studios, a new Castlevania and Bloober Team’s Silent Hill are currently developing. It may be the Silent Hill stage, considering the amount of smoke seen earlier in the year. Konami says Metal Gear Solid is coming back. Although we don’t know the exact time or how it will happen, more than a decade has passed since the HD Collection (ironically at 720p). A new round of remasters seems like a safe bet.

After the three first games have been made playable on PC, Konami will tackle a more difficult challenge: extracting Metal Gear Solid 4’s Cell processor from the PlayStation 3 and making it playable on hardware starting this decade.
