Blizzard confirmed that Overwatch 2 will replace skill rating by skill divisions as part of a series of changes to the sequel’s competitive mode.

The developer stated that the decision to eliminate skill rating, a numerical value that shifts between matches, was made in an effort “to relieve the feeling of being stuck at one rank.” ”

“Seeing the SR change after every match almost felt like taking an exam with the teacher passing you or failing you based only on one question,” a recent post to the game’s site explains. It was stressful and didn’t show players an accurate picture of their overall performance in Competitive. ”

Overwatch 2’s competitive mode has tiers. These tiers range from Bronze to Grand Master. Each has five divisions, ranging in rank from 5 (lowest) to 1 (highest). The 500 top players won’t have to deal separately with each tier division.

According to the developer, “Tier Divisions are the same skill levels that SR, but they give players a higher level view of where they’re in Competitive.” Each division is approximately equal to 100 SR. Instead of receiving a single game, players will be updated every week with a competitive update. “
