Well, it’s official. Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor has swept away in a flash of glory in last night’s feature-length episode of Doctor Who. Instead of the expected Ncuti Gatwa regeneration, we were left with a confused-looking David Tennant as the 10th Doctor.

Tennant’s Doctor said, “I know these teeth,” as he realized that the new form of Tennant wasn’t so new after all. He then signed off with a teaser that confirmed that we would have to wait for a full year before finding out why.

If you have been following Doctor Who, Tennant’s return has been known for some time. For the 60th anniversary, Tennant will return with his companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) and Russel T. Davies (showrunner).

Although it is not unusual for former Doctors to make an anniversary return, few people could have imagined that Whittaker would turn Tennant back. Fans were thrilled to see Tennant return as the Time Lord; it was obvious.

According to Davies, Gatwa will debut next year as the 15th Doctor. This means Tennant is the 14th Doctor. The 10th Doctor. The meta-crisis Doctor. The 10.5th Doctor. Good lord.

The shocking cliffhanger was described by the showrunner as “if you thought that the appearance of David Tennant had been a shock,” The path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor is filled with horror, robots and puppets, fun, mystery, and even danger! How is this connected to Donna Noble’s return? How, what, and why? We give you one year to think, and then all hell breaks loose!”
